OMB - Oh My Bama

It's A Beautiful Day on this chilly 1/20/2009, but you paid that frost no mind because you had your eyes glued to the tube or you were in the District of Columbia (Like I) to witness this monumentous occasion. Our 44 Man President Barack Obama. Just to be amongst soooo many people in what really felt like the United States of America, to me. It was a great feeling with an added bonus of chatting with the ever so lovely Rosario Dawson for a bit in GeorgeTown. But cheers to you Mr. President, you have your work cut out for you and your in our prayers.

It is time for us to get up and live and "Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America".

Inspiration of 08

My inspiration musically for the year of 2008 may be a who's who for some and a "oh yea...I been down with him", for others. This is my Top 5 of musical eargasms for 08.

1) The Abrstract: Q-Tip

Once "The Renaissance" dropped I knew that anything was possible. I mean hey, we did make history with our first President of CoLoR. But aside from that Q-Tip came back letting us true schoolers know to keep on believing in the music despite the junk that's been polluting the air waves as of lately.

2) Black MiLk

I damn near cried when J-DiLLa died and I felt lost musically for a minute because i felt as though who in the HeLL is gonna carry that torch from The D and let alone for Hip-Hop. Black MiLk was like a breath of fresh air with his DiLLa-esque sound which he has grown into his own of course. With Stellar effort after stellar effort I knew he was someone to reckn with in the game. If you don't know yet PLEASE get "TRONIC", and you will see what I mean.

3) iLLa-J

From the Yancey lineage of good music. Does he have BIG shoes to fill??? No, but I know he's gonna create some awesome shoes for people to try on and check out. "The Yancey Boys", was just beautifully made as the intro as to who the next Yancey is up to bat, and I see homebwoy taking it out the park for he is making his own lane in this here rap game. And I can not wait for him to drop an album with his own production because the bit that I have heard, dude is more than iLL. Maybe that's why he's known as iLLa-J.

4) Elzhi

The iLLest, Tightest, & Dopest MC ever that's just right around the corner. Damn that "on the come up" crap, the brotha been around. If you know Slum V. than you already know, if you copped "The Preface" then you already know. And he is from The D. He inspired me because he's 1 of those cats that you know is iLL and you wonder if they are using their gifts properly/wisely and Sho-Nuff he was, after blessing the masses of fans with "The Preface". An inspiration for the regular nation.

5) The Beat Konducta: MadLib

This ISN'T going in any particular order mind you, but I have to save the BEST for last (He's better than your favorite producer/rapper and what you may think is tight in my opinion). The Beat Konducta himself; MadLib a true inspiration for 08.
Here you have a musical genius that basically does what he wants musically, and the funny thing is "He Could Care Less" and you would still give him a listen just to see what he's about. He should be inspiring to many people that feel boxed in and that aren't able to do what they do best or better yet, be themselves. You should check out "WLIB AM: King of the WigFlip" to understand what is going on in the MadLib universe. Truly an inspiration for the regular nation.

There you have it folks, my Top 5 for 08 that got me off my ass of deep thought and stress, to understand "The Science" of "Gettin Up".
So, "R U Listening" or "Losing Out"?
To each his own, just know this is "The Way That I Live"

Inspiration

2008 was a very very interesting year for me and many of my friends. Some of us, including myself, left well established companies to pursue our careers in fashion, music or whatever. It was a time of reflection and just being supportive of one another.

Eventhough there were a few rough patches in the road, these 3 cd's always seemed to lift my spirits and inspire me to never give up.

1. We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things- Jason Mraz

Not only did this cd inspire me, it taught me how to cope with what I would always think was un-copable (is that a word??? idk...i like it...lol) Waking up to songs like Live High and Details in the Fabric always seemed to make my mornings a little more easier...

2. Whats the time Mr. Wolf?- The Noisettes

One song sums it up...SCRATCH YOUR NAME

"Scratch your name into the fabric of this world before you go"

NUFF SAID

3. Santogold- Santogold

Santi White makes me dance and her self titled album played on my mp3 player whenever I was taking long rides home or in my room feeling blue. She made me feel hella good about life with songs like Im a Lady...

Check it out

Now won't you run and tell your boyfriend
Tell him don't hold his breath for me
I've got some money I was saving
Got some hearts that I'll be breaking
Know someday they'll make a martyr out of me
I know someday they'll make a martyr out of me
She's so fine
And I like sometimes to wave it high
Up where everyone can see
I'm a lady
Got my mind made up
Got my mind made up
I like to watch the way the wind blows
What does it know that I don't get
Ooh, oh, look so pretty now
You're just so sweet
Let's see how far you can get
See just how far you can get....

So yea these three cd's got me through 2008...

Thank you, you talented, talented artists
